Ruth 4:14-15 — Meaning & Reflection
“The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the Lord , who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in- law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth."”
God can bring new life into a wounded story without asking us to pretend its losses never mattered.
Background
After Boaz marries Ruth and she bears a son, Bethlehem’s women bless the Lord on Naomi’s behalf. The child, later named Obed, becomes David’s grandfather, linking this family’s restoration to Israel’s wider story.
Teaching
The women recognize God’s kindness in the child who will renew and sustain Naomi’s life. They also honor Ruth’s love as a remarkable gift to her mother-in-law. Naomi’s earlier grief is not dismissed, but it no longer holds the whole story. This restoration invites hope in God’s care without promising that every loss will be answered in the same way.
Reflect
- What quiet signs of care can I notice alongside my grief or disappointment?
- Whose faithful love have I received, and how might I acknowledge it?
Prayer
Lord, meet me in the places where loss has narrowed my hope. Help me recognize the love you provide and remain open to the good I cannot yet imagine. Amen.
