1 Samuel 2:1-2 — Meaning & Reflection

“Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the Lord ; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. "There is no one holy like the Lord ; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.”

1 Samuel 2:1-2 (NIV)

The deepest joy of answered prayer is discovering anew the holiness and steadiness of the God who hears.

Background

Hannah offers this prayer after bringing Samuel to serve the Lord at Shiloh, fulfilling the vow she made in her distress. Her song moves from personal rejoicing to praise of God’s power to overturn human pride and lift the lowly.

Teaching

Hannah rejoices in the Lord, not only in the gift she has received. The image of her exalted horn expresses renewed strength and dignity, while the rock portrays God’s incomparable dependability. Her praise holds together God’s holiness and his care for the vulnerable. We can bring him our gratitude while remembering that his worth does not depend on receiving every answer we desire.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, I rejoice in your goodness and thank you for hearing my prayers. Anchor my heart in your holiness and faithfulness, whatever this day brings. Amen.
