Romans 6:4 — Meaning & Reflection
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Union with the risen Christ opens a new way of life, not merely a new view of the past.
Background
Paul answers the suggestion that believers should continue in sin so that grace may increase. He points to baptism into Christ's death and resurrection as the foundation of a changed life.
Teaching
Baptism marks our participation in Christ's death and resurrection, joining the story of our lives to his. His burial means that the old dominion of sin is not our rightful home. His resurrection reveals the Father's glory and grounds our calling to live differently. Newness of life takes shape in ordinary acts of obedience, made possible by belonging to the risen Lord.
Reflect
- What old pattern am I treating as inevitable even though I belong to Christ?
- What concrete act of obedience could express newness of life today?
Prayer
Risen Lord Jesus, thank you for drawing me into your death and resurrection. Help me leave old patterns behind and walk today in the new life you give. Amen.
