Romans 5:3-5 — Meaning & Reflection

“Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.”

Romans 5:3-5 (NIV)

Suffering does not have the final word when God's love is being poured into our hearts.

Background

Paul has just described the peace and hope that come through justification by faith. He now explains how suffering fits within that hope, before pointing to Christ's death as the demonstration of God's love.

Teaching

Paul does not call suffering pleasant or ask us to deny its pain. He teaches that, within God's care, affliction can produce endurance, tested character, and deepening hope. This hope rests on God's love, not on our ability to remain strong at every moment. The Holy Ghost makes that love known in our hearts, assuring us that hardship is not evidence of abandonment.

Reflect

Prayer

God, I bring you my suffering without pretending it is easy. Pour your love into my heart by the Holy Ghost, and nurture a hope that holds to you. Amen.
