Romans 6:11-14 — Meaning & Reflection
“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.”
Grace frees us from sin's rule and invites us to offer our whole selves to God.
Background
After explaining believers' union with Christ in his death and resurrection, Paul turns to practical instruction. He calls them to resist sin's reign and present themselves to God as people made alive.
Teaching
To reckon ourselves dead to sin is to take seriously what belonging to Christ means. Temptation remains real, but sin no longer has the rightful claim of a master over us. Paul calls us to offer our bodies and abilities to God, turning faith into concrete choices. Being under grace does not excuse wrongdoing; it establishes a new life in which sin's dominion is broken.
Reflect
- Where am I yielding my attention or abilities to a pattern that dishonors God?
- How could I offer my body, words, or work to God today?
Prayer
Lord, help me remember that I am alive to you through Jesus Christ. I offer you my body, words, and choices; teach me to resist sin and live under your grace. Amen.
