Romans 6:22-23 — Meaning & Reflection
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Sin pays in death, but God gives life that we could never earn.
Background
Paul concludes his contrast between slavery to sin and service to God. He distinguishes the destructive outcome of sin from the holiness and eternal life that follow belonging to God through Christ.
Teaching
Freedom from sin is not freedom from every commitment; it is liberation to belong to God. This new belonging bears fruit in holiness and leads toward everlasting life. Paul carefully contrasts wages with a gift: death is sin's outcome, while eternal life is God's generosity through Jesus Christ. Our obedience grows from receiving that gift, not from trying to purchase it.
Reflect
- What fruit is growing from the commitments that shape my daily life?
- How would gratitude for God's gift change my approach to obedience?
Prayer
Father, thank you for giving me eternal life through Jesus Christ rather than leaving me to sin's wages. Let gratitude deepen my obedience and make my life fruitful in holiness. Amen.
