Romans 5:1-2 — Meaning & Reflection
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.”
Through Jesus, grace is the place where we stand, not a reward we struggle to reach.
Background
Following his discussion of Abraham's faith, Paul describes the blessings that flow from justification by faith. Peace with God, access to grace, and hope introduce his teaching about assurance amid suffering.
Teaching
Being justified by faith brings peace with God through Jesus Christ. This peace means reconciliation with God, even when our emotions remain unsettled. Through Christ, we stand in grace rather than continually trying to earn admission to God's favor. Our hope looks toward sharing in God's glory, giving today's uncertain steps a lasting horizon.
Reflect
- Where am I still acting as though I must earn my welcome with God?
- How can peace with God steady me even when I do not feel peaceful?
Prayer
Father, thank you for bringing me into peace with you through Jesus. Help me stand in your grace today and rejoice in the hope of your glory. Amen.
