Romans 4:20-21 — Meaning & Reflection
“Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”
Faith rests not in favorable circumstances, but in the faithfulness and power of the One who promises.
Background
Paul uses Abraham's story to explain righteousness received through faith rather than earned by works. Here he describes Abraham's confidence in God's promise of offspring despite his and Sarah's advanced age.
Teaching
Abraham's hope rested on God's ability to fulfill what he had promised. His circumstances offered no natural assurance, yet he gave glory to God by trusting him. Faith does not require pretending that obstacles are small; it recognizes that God's power is greater. We are called to trust God's actual promises, rather than mistake every personal desire for a guarantee from him.
Reflect
- Which promise of God do I need to return to in my present uncertainty?
- How can I acknowledge real obstacles while still giving glory to God?
Prayer
Faithful God, strengthen my trust in what you have truly promised. Help me face uncertainty honestly while resting in your wisdom and power. Amen.
