Romans 3:23-26 — Meaning & Reflection

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”

Romans 3:23-26 (NIV)

At the cross, God neither ignores our sin nor abandons us to it.

Background

After showing that both Jews and Gentiles are under sin, Paul explains the righteousness God makes known through faith in Jesus Christ. This passage presents Christ's sacrificial death as the basis of gracious justification.

Teaching

All of us fall short of God's glory, leaving no room for spiritual superiority. Yet God freely justifies those who believe through the redemption accomplished by Jesus. Christ's blood deals with sin, showing that God's forgiveness is not indifference to evil. At the cross, God's justice and saving mercy are revealed together, giving us reason to confess honestly and trust deeply.

Reflect

Prayer

Merciful God, I confess that I have fallen short of your glory. Thank you for redeeming me through Jesus; help me rest in your grace and extend mercy to others. Amen.
