Romans 1:16-17 — Meaning & Reflection
“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."”
The gospel is not advice for proving ourselves, but God's power to save everyone who believes.
Background
Paul writes to believers in Rome and expresses his eagerness to preach the gospel there. These verses introduce central themes of the letter, including salvation, God's righteousness, and faith, with a quotation from Habakkuk.
Teaching
Paul's confidence rests in what God does through the gospel, not in the world's approval of it. Salvation is offered to everyone who believes, honoring Israel's place in God's unfolding purpose while reaching the nations. The gospel reveals God's righteousness and calls us to live by faith rather than boast in ourselves. We need not hide the good news or turn it into a burden of self-salvation.
Reflect
- When am I tempted to feel ashamed of the gospel?
- Where am I relying on my own worthiness instead of trusting God's saving power?
Prayer
Lord, deepen my confidence in the good news of Jesus Christ. Help me live by faith and share your saving grace with humility and courage. Amen.
