Romans 15:13 — Meaning & Reflection
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Hope overflows not because life becomes certain, but because the God of hope meets us as we trust him.
Background
Paul offers this prayer after urging believers to welcome one another as Christ welcomed them. The preceding verses cite Scripture to show Gentiles sharing in praise and hope alongside God's people Israel.
Teaching
God is the source of the hope Paul desires for these believers. As they trust him, joy and peace can take root even amid unresolved circumstances. This overflowing hope comes through the Holy Spirit's power, not through forced optimism. We can ask God for it as a gift that sustains us and enriches our life together.
Reflect
- Where am I relying on favorable circumstances to supply my hope?
- How could the hope God gives me become encouragement for someone else?
Prayer
God of hope, fill me with joy and peace as I trust you. By your Spirit, let hope overflow in me and bring encouragement to those around me. Amen.
