1 Corinthians 1:18 — Meaning & Reflection
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
The cross reveals God's saving power where the world sees only weakness.
Background
Paul writes to a divided church in Corinth, confronting its attachment to impressive leaders and human wisdom. He places the message of Christ crucified at the center of God's saving work.
Teaching
The cross challenges our instinct to recognize power only in success, strength, or admiration. What appears foolish to the world is the very means God uses to save. In Jesus crucified, we meet a love that bears sin rather than merely offering advice. Today, we can rest our confidence in Christ instead of trying to make ourselves impressive.
Reflect
- Where am I more concerned with appearing impressive than trusting Christ?
- How might the cross reshape my understanding of strength today?
Prayer
Father, help me recognize Your power in the cross of Jesus. Teach me to rest in His saving love rather than my own accomplishments. Amen.
