Romans 14:17-19 — Meaning & Reflection
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.”
God's kingdom grows visible when we seek righteousness, peace, and joy rather than winning disputes over secondary matters.
Background
Romans 14 addresses disagreements among believers about food and the observance of days. Paul urges them not to judge one another or use their freedom in ways that cause another believer to stumble.
Teaching
Food practices are not the defining substance of God's kingdom. Its life is marked by righteousness, peace, and joy through the Holy Spirit. Serving Christ therefore means caring about how our choices affect the faith of others, not merely insisting on our rights. Pursuing peace does not abandon truth; it seeks to build others up rather than prevail over them.
Reflect
- Where have I allowed a secondary disagreement to overshadow my love for another believer?
- What choice could I make today that would strengthen someone else's faith?
Prayer
Father, help me value the life of your kingdom more than the satisfaction of winning an argument. Guide me by your Spirit toward choices that make peace and build others up. Amen.
