Romans 10:11-13 — Meaning & Reflection
“As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."”
God's mercy welcomes everyone who calls on Jesus; no background places anyone beyond his invitation.
Background
Paul supports his teaching about salvation through faith with quotations from Isaiah and Joel. In a discussion involving Jews and Gentiles, he emphasizes that the same Lord offers salvation to all who call upon him.
Teaching
No ethnic heritage gives someone a privileged route to salvation or excludes someone from God's mercy. The Lord is generous toward all who call on him in faith. The promise of not being ashamed means that trust in him will not finally prove misplaced, not that believers will never face ridicule. This wide welcome invites us both to approach God confidently and to welcome others without superiority.
Reflect
- What makes me hesitate to believe that God's invitation truly includes me?
- Whom might I be treating as less welcome to God's mercy?
Prayer
Lord, help me receive your mercy with humble confidence. Open my heart to others and remove the prejudices that contradict your generous welcome. Amen.
