Romans 10:9-10 — Meaning & Reflection
“That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”
Saving faith trusts the risen Jesus and gives that trust a voice.
Background
In Romans 10, Paul discusses righteousness through faith while expressing concern for Israel's salvation. Drawing on Deuteronomy's language about the nearness of God's word, he connects heartfelt belief with confession of Jesus as Lord.
Teaching
The gospel calls us to trust that God raised Jesus from the dead and to acknowledge Jesus as Lord. Belief and confession belong together as inward trust and its outward expression. These are not magic words that place God under obligation, but a response of faith to his saving work. Salvation draws us into a life centered on the risen Christ rather than our own achievements.
Reflect
- What does trusting the risen Jesus mean for the concern closest to my heart?
- Where can my words honestly express my allegiance to Jesus today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I trust you as my risen Savior and Lord. Help my words and choices express the faith I hold in my heart. Amen.
