Romans 11:33-36 — Meaning & Reflection
“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?" For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.”
When God's ways exceed your understanding, wonder can become a faithful form of worship.
Background
Paul closes Romans 9–11, his sustained discussion of Israel, the Gentiles, and God's mercy, with praise. Drawing on Old Testament language, he celebrates wisdom that no human adviser could supply.
Teaching
God's wisdom is deeper than our ability to trace every part of his purpose. He does not depend on our counsel, and his gifts never make him our debtor. All things come from him, depend upon him, and find their ultimate purpose in his glory. Recognizing these limits can move us from demanding mastery toward humble, grateful worship.
Reflect
- Where am I struggling to trust God without fully understanding his ways?
- What gift could I receive with gratitude today rather than treating it as something owed to me?
Prayer
God, I confess how often I want your purposes to fit within my understanding. Teach me to trust your wisdom and live for your glory. Amen.
