Psalm 55:22 — Meaning & Reflection
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.”
Giving God our burdens means trusting his sustaining care, not pretending the weight is gone.
Background
Psalm 55, attributed to David, voices anguish over violence and betrayal by a close companion. The call to cast one’s burden on the Lord appears near its conclusion, amid renewed expressions of trust.
Teaching
The invitation is to entrust our burden to God rather than carry it as though we were alone. The promise emphasizes his sustaining care, not the immediate disappearance of every hardship. In a psalm filled with distress, confidence that the righteous will not be moved points to God’s faithful keeping rather than an untouched life. We can bring him the same concern repeatedly while taking the responsible steps before us.
Reflect
- Which burden am I carrying as though everything depends on me?
- How can I entrust it to God while still taking appropriate action?
Prayer
Father, I place the weight of this day into your hands. Sustain me, and help me act faithfully without trying to control every outcome. Amen.
