Psalm 56:3-4 — Meaning & Reflection
“When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”
Trust does not require the absence of fear; it begins by turning toward God within it.
Background
Psalm 56’s heading connects it with David’s seizure by the Philistines in Gath. Surrounded by hostile people, the psalmist repeatedly answers fear with trust in God and praise for his word.
Teaching
David openly acknowledges fear before declaring his trust. Faith here is not a claim of emotional invulnerability but a deliberate reliance on God’s faithfulness. Praising God’s word shifts attention from human threats to the One whose authority exceeds them. People can cause real harm, yet their power does not cancel God’s care or determine our ultimate hope.
Reflect
- What fear can I bring to God without feeling ashamed of it?
- Which truth about God can help guide my response to that fear?
Prayer
Lord, when I am afraid, help me turn toward you rather than hide my fear. Root my confidence in your word and give me courage to walk faithfully today. Amen.
