Psalm 51:15-17 — Meaning & Reflection
“O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
God welcomes the honest heart that stops making excuses and turns toward his mercy.
Background
Psalm 51’s heading places David’s prayer after Nathan confronted him concerning Bathsheba. These verses belong to a plea for cleansing and renewal, emphasizing heartfelt repentance rather than sacrifice offered without contrition.
Teaching
David asks God to restore the praise that sin has damaged. Religious offerings cannot substitute for an honest acknowledgment of wrongdoing. A broken and contrite heart is not self-hatred but humble repentance that abandons excuses and seeks mercy. God’s willingness to receive such a heart gives us courage to confess and change direction.
Reflect
- Where might outward religious activity be replacing honest repentance in my life?
- What would turning toward God’s mercy and away from sin look like today?
Prayer
Lord, I confess my need for your forgiveness and renewal. Give me a humble, honest heart, and restore praise that flows from your mercy. Amen.
