Psalm 46:1-3 — Meaning & Reflection

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah”

Psalm 46:1-3 (NIV)

When familiar foundations shake, God remains a refuge we can turn to.

Background

Psalm 46 is associated with the sons of Korah and celebrates God’s presence with his people. Its opening pictures cosmic upheaval, while later verses describe raging nations and God’s power to end warfare.

Teaching

The psalm locates our security in God, not in the stability of the world around us. Mountains collapsing into the sea portray even the most dependable features of life giving way. Yet God remains present and able to help amid the trouble itself. Courage grows as we turn toward him, even when our emotions take time to settle.

Reflect

Prayer

God, be my refuge when the things I depend on feel uncertain. Help me turn toward your presence and receive strength for this day. Amen.
