Psalm 18:1-3 — Meaning & Reflection

“I love you, O Lord , my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord , who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.”

Psalm 18:1-3 (NIV)

We can love God honestly and lean on him completely, because his strength does not depend on ours.

Background

Psalm 18's title identifies it as David's song after the Lord delivered him from his enemies and from Saul. A closely parallel song appears in 2 Samuel 22.

Teaching

David begins his testimony of deliverance with love for the Lord. His images of rock, fortress, and shield describe God as dependable protection when human strength is insufficient. These are words of grateful dependence, not a promise that faithful people will never face danger. Remembering God's help can turn our anxious striving into prayer and our relief into praise.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, I love you and acknowledge how much I need your strength. Help me bring my fears to you and remember your faithfulness with praise. Amen.
