Psalm 19:7-10 — Meaning & Reflection
“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.”
God's instruction is a gift that restores us, not a burden meant to diminish us.
Background
Psalm 19, attributed to David, moves from God's glory displayed in the heavens to the goodness of his revealed instruction. These verses celebrate that instruction before the psalm closes with prayer for cleansing and acceptance.
Teaching
God's commands reveal his trustworthy character and his good purposes for human life. They restore the soul, give wisdom, and bring clarity where our understanding is limited. Their value exceeds wealth because they teach us to walk with the One who made us. We receive them rightly when we approach God with reverence and a willingness to be changed.
Reflect
- Do I approach God's instruction mainly as a burden or as a gift?
- What part of God's Word am I being invited to value above comfort or gain?
Prayer
Lord, open my heart to the goodness of your instruction. Give me a growing delight in your Word and the humility to follow it. Amen.
