Psalm 16:8-11 — Meaning & Reflection
“I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
With God before us, hope reaches beyond what we can see—even beyond the grave.
Background
Psalm 16, attributed to David, expresses confidence in God as the psalmist's refuge and portion. In Acts 2 and Acts 13, Peter and Paul apply its words about freedom from corruption to Jesus' resurrection.
Teaching
Setting the Lord before us means deliberately orienting our lives around his presence and faithfulness. The psalmist's gladness grows from confidence that God will not abandon him to death. In Jesus' resurrection, Christians see the decisive victory that gives this hope its fullest expression. God leads us toward life and a joy rooted in communion with him, not merely in favourable circumstances.
Reflect
- What would it look like to keep the Lord before me in today's decisions?
- How does Jesus' resurrection speak to a fear or uncertainty I am carrying?
Prayer
Lord, keep my attention turned toward your faithful presence. Ground my hope in the risen Jesus and lead me along your path of life. Amen.
