Matthew 6:19-21 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
What we treasure draws our hearts; investing in God’s kingdom teaches us to love what lasts.
Background
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus contrasts vulnerable earthly wealth with lasting heavenly treasure. This teaching leads into his warning that no one can serve both God and riches.
Teaching
Earthly possessions cannot provide lasting security because they remain vulnerable to decay and loss. Jesus invites us to invest in what matters to God rather than making accumulation our life’s aim. Our hearts follow what we consistently prize and pursue. Generosity, faithful service, and obedience help turn our attention toward the kingdom that endures.
Reflect
- What do my spending, time, and attention reveal about my treasure?
- What lasting good could I invest in today through generosity or service?
Prayer
Lord, show me where I have asked possessions to give me security only you can provide. Turn my heart toward your kingdom and make me generous with what I have. Amen.
