Daily Teaching

Matthew 6:9-12 — Meaning & Reflection

“"This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Matthew 6:9-12 (NIV)

Prayer turns our hearts toward the Father’s glory while teaching us to depend on his daily care.

Background

Jesus gives this model prayer after warning against prayer performed for public praise and empty repetition. Within the Sermon on the Mount, it teaches his disciples to approach God as their heavenly Father.

Teaching

Jesus begins with God’s name, kingdom, and will, placing our desires within the larger purpose of his reign. Yet this holy Father also welcomes requests for daily bread and forgiveness. The prayer’s shared language reminds us that dependence on God is not a solitary life. As we ask for mercy, we are also called to extend forgiveness to others.

Reflect

Prayer

My Father in heaven, let your name be honored and your will shape my desires. Provide what I need today, forgive my sins, and help me forgive those who have wronged me. Amen.
