Matthew 6:25-27 — Meaning & Reflection

“"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?”

Matthew 6:25-27 (NIV)

Your life matters to the Father beyond what worry can measure or control.

Background

After teaching that people cannot serve both God and riches, Jesus addresses anxiety about food, drink, and clothing. He points to birds as witnesses to the heavenly Father’s provision.

Teaching

Jesus meets ordinary worries with a reminder of the Father’s care. If God feeds the birds, his children are not beneath his notice. Worry cannot secure our lives, and our worth is greater than the needs occupying our minds. This invitation to trust does not forbid responsible action; it frees us to act without treating anxiety as our provider.

Reflect

Prayer

Father, you know the needs that make me anxious. Help me receive your care, take the next wise step, and entrust what I cannot control to you. Amen.
