Matthew 4:4 — Meaning & Reflection

“Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "”

Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Bread sustains the body, but God’s word teaches us how to truly live.

Background

After fasting forty days in the wilderness, Jesus is tempted by the devil to turn stones into bread. He answers with Deuteronomy 8:3, recalling Israel’s dependence on God during its wilderness journey.

Teaching

Jesus does not dismiss physical hunger; he refuses to let hunger determine his obedience. He trusts his Father rather than using his power at the tempter’s bidding. His answer reminds us that life depends on more than satisfying immediate needs. God’s word nourishes our trust and guides us when a tempting shortcut seems easier than faithfulness.

Reflect

Prayer

Father, I confess how easily my immediate needs take over my attention. Nourish me through your word and help me trust you without taking shortcuts. Amen.
