Matthew 1:21-23 — Meaning & Reflection
“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us."”
In Jesus, God comes near not merely to share our world, but to save us from our sins.
Background
In Matthew’s opening chapter, an angel reassures Joseph about Mary’s pregnancy and tells him to name the child Jesus. Matthew identifies this birth as the fulfillment of the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14.
Teaching
The names Jesus and Emmanuel reveal both his mission and his presence. He comes to rescue his people from sin, not simply to make their circumstances easier. In him, God draws near to a world that cannot heal itself. We can bring him our guilt and loneliness, trusting that his saving mercy meets our deepest need.
Reflect
- Where do I need to receive Jesus’ forgiveness rather than hide my sin?
- How might remembering that God is with me change the way I face today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I need both your forgiveness and your presence. Help me welcome your saving grace into the places I am tempted to hide. Amen.
