Matthew 4:19-20 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him.”
Jesus calls us to follow before we know all he will make of us.
Background
As Jesus begins his ministry in Galilee, he encounters Simon Peter and Andrew casting a net into the Sea of Galilee. He calls these brothers to leave their fishing work and become his disciples.
Teaching
The invitation begins with a relationship: Jesus calls them to follow him. The promise of transformation rests on what he will make of them, not on skills they already possess. Their immediate response shows a willingness to place his call above familiar securities. Following Jesus today means trusting his leadership and becoming available to draw others toward him.
Reflect
- What familiar security might be making me hesitant to follow Jesus?
- Where is Jesus inviting me to take a simple step of obedience today?
Prayer
Jesus, help me follow you even when I cannot see the whole path. Shape my life through your presence and make me available to share your love. Amen.
