Matthew 5:3-6 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
God’s kingdom opens hope to those who know their need and long for his righteousness.
Background
These verses open the Beatitudes at the beginning of Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches his disciples with the crowds nearby, describing the surprising blessedness of life under God’s reign.
Teaching
Jesus calls blessed those whom the world may overlook: the spiritually needy, the grieving, the meek, and those longing for righteousness. Their hope rests not in their weakness itself, but in God’s promised kingdom, comfort, inheritance, and satisfaction. Meekness is not worthlessness, and spiritual poverty is not a failure to impress God. We may approach him honestly, trusting his goodness rather than pretending to be self-sufficient.
Reflect
- Where am I trying to appear self-sufficient instead of admitting my need for God?
- What would it look like to hunger for righteousness in my relationships today?
Prayer
Father, I bring you my need, my grief, and my longing for what is right. Teach me to receive your kingdom with humility and to trust your promises. Amen.
