Matthew 28:18-20 — Meaning & Reflection
“Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."”
Jesus sends us with his authority and sustains us with his presence.
Background
Matthew closes with the risen Jesus meeting the eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee. There he commissions them to make disciples among all nations.
Teaching
The mission begins with Jesus’ authority, not the disciples’ confidence or strength. He calls his followers to welcome people into a life of baptism, learning, and obedience. This calling reaches beyond familiar places and people because his reign embraces every nation. His enduring presence assures us that we never undertake his work alone.
Reflect
- Where might Jesus be inviting me to help someone learn to follow him?
- How does his promised presence change my response to feeling inadequate?
Prayer
Risen Lord, help me participate faithfully in your mission wherever you place me. Give me courage to speak, patience to teach, and confidence that you are with me. Amen.
