Matthew 25:35-36 — Meaning & Reflection

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'”

Matthew 25:35-36 (NIV)

Love for Christ takes tangible shape when we attend to hunger, loneliness, and need.

Background

Near the end of Matthew’s account of Jesus’ teaching, Jesus describes the Son of man judging the nations as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. The King identifies himself with those he calls his least brethren.

Teaching

Jesus gives profound weight to simple acts of mercy. Food, welcome, clothing, and companionship matter to the King because the people receiving them matter to him. These actions do not make compassion a way of purchasing God’s favor; they reveal a love that moves beyond words. Following Jesus means learning to notice vulnerable people rather than passing them by.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord Jesus, open my eyes to people I might otherwise overlook. Help me offer what I have with humility, remembering that mercy matters deeply to you. Amen.
