Matthew 22:37-40 — Meaning & Reflection
“Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."”
A life centered on God’s love grows outward into love for the people beside us.
Background
During disputes with religious leaders in Jerusalem, a lawyer asks Jesus which commandment is greatest. Jesus answers with commands from Deuteronomy and Leviticus, presenting them as the foundation of the Law and the Prophets.
Teaching
God calls for love that involves our whole being, not merely religious words or occasional attention. That devotion cannot be separated from how we treat our neighbors. Jesus shows that God’s commands belong together as a life of faithful love. Ordinary acts of patience, honesty, and generosity can become concrete expressions of devotion to him.
Reflect
- What part of my life am I withholding from wholehearted love for God?
- Who needs the same care and consideration I naturally seek for myself?
Prayer
Lord, draw my heart, soul, and mind toward you. Let my love for you become visible in the patient and practical care I offer my neighbor today. Amen.
