Mark 6:31 — Meaning & Reflection
“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."”
Jesus cares not only about the work we do, but also about the weariness we carry.
Background
The apostles return from their mission and tell Jesus what they have done and taught. With crowds leaving them no time even to eat, he invites them to withdraw to a deserted place and rest.
Teaching
Jesus recognizes that his followers have bodily needs and limited energy. His invitation shows that rest is not opposed to faithful service. We do not honor God by pretending we are without limits or that everything depends on us. Making room for rest can become an act of trust in the One whose care continues when our work pauses.
Reflect
- What signs of weariness have I been ignoring?
- What small boundary could help me receive rest as a gift rather than feel guilty about it?
Prayer
Lord, help me acknowledge my limits without shame. Teach me to receive rest with gratitude and trust that your care does not depend on my constant activity. Amen.
