Mark 9:23-24 — Meaning & Reflection
“" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"”
Honest faith can bring its doubts to Jesus and ask for help.
Background
After the disciples are unable to deliver a boy from an unclean spirit, his father appeals to Jesus. Jesus challenges the father’s uncertainty about his ability, and the father responds with a candid plea for help believing.
Teaching
The father does not pretend his trust is complete or his struggle resolved. He brings both belief and unbelief directly to Jesus. Faith depends on the power and mercy of its object, not on our ability to manufacture perfect certainty. Jesus’ words invite bold trust in God’s power, not the belief that sufficient confidence guarantees every desired outcome.
Reflect
- Where do belief and doubt sit alongside each other in my heart?
- What would I say to Jesus if I stopped trying to make my prayer sound certain?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I believe, yet I know how much unbelief remains in me. Meet me in my uncertainty and strengthen my trust in your power, wisdom, and love. Amen.
