Luke 7:47-50 — Meaning & Reflection

“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."”

Luke 7:47-50 (NIV)

Forgiveness does not reward our love; it awakens love where shame once lived.

Background

While Jesus eats at Simon the Pharisee’s house, a woman known as a sinner weeps at his feet and anoints them. Jesus answers Simon’s judgment with a parable about two debtors whose debts are forgiven.

Teaching

The woman’s great love reveals her response to great forgiveness, not a payment that purchases it. Jesus makes clear that her faith, rather than her reputation or achievements, is the means by which she receives salvation. His declaration of forgiveness reveals an authority that astonishes the other guests. He sends her away in peace, giving her a future no longer defined by her sins.

Reflect

Prayer

Jesus, I bring you the sins and shame I cannot remove myself. Help me trust your forgiveness and respond with grateful love. Amen.
