Luke 6:37-38 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."”
The mercy we receive from God invites us to loosen our judgments and open our hands.
Background
These sayings continue Jesus’ teaching about enemy-love and the Father’s mercy in Luke 6. The image of an overflowing measure draws on the measuring of goods, pictured as poured into the fold of a garment.
Teaching
Jesus warns against a condemning spirit that treats other people as beyond mercy. He calls us instead to forgive and give with the generosity we desire to receive. The overflowing measure portrays abundance, not a formula for obtaining wealth. Our treatment of others matters before God, whose mercy teaches us a different way to live.
Reflect
- Where have I been quick to condemn rather than seek understanding?
- How can I practice forgiveness or generosity without keeping score?
Prayer
Lord, I confess how easily I measure others harshly. Give me a forgiving heart and open hands, shaped by the mercy you have shown me. Amen.
