Luke 10:20 — Meaning & Reflection
“However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."”
Our deepest joy rests not in what we accomplish for God, but in belonging to him.
Background
The seventy return from their mission rejoicing that demons submit to them through Jesus’ name. Jesus acknowledges their authority but redirects their joy toward their standing in heaven.
Teaching
Jesus does not dismiss the good his followers have experienced in ministry. He teaches them that spiritual accomplishments are not the safest foundation for joy. Their greater treasure is belonging to God, pictured by their names written in heaven. We too can receive fruitful work with gratitude without making visible success the measure of our worth.
Reflect
- How much does my sense of worth depend on visible results?
- What would change today if belonging to God became my deepest reason for joy?
Prayer
Father, I thank you that my worth is not measured by my accomplishments. Root my joy in belonging to you, whether my work feels fruitful or unnoticed. Amen.
