Luke 10:41-42 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."”
Jesus welcomes our service, but he will not let our busyness replace the gift of listening to him.
Background
Martha welcomes Jesus into her home, while Mary sits at his feet and listens to his teaching. When Martha asks Jesus to make Mary help with serving, he responds to Martha’s anxiety and defends Mary’s choice.
Teaching
Jesus addresses Martha tenderly, naming the worry that has overtaken her hospitality. He does not declare service worthless; he shows that attending to him must not be crowded out by it. Mary receives his teaching as something of lasting value. We serve more faithfully when our activity grows from listening rather than resentment or anxious striving.
Reflect
- When does my desire to serve become worry or resentment?
- Where can I make room to listen to Jesus before rushing into the next task?
Prayer
Jesus, I often let urgent tasks crowd out attention to you. Quiet my anxious striving and teach me to serve from a heart that listens. Amen.
