Leviticus 19:17-18 — Meaning & Reflection
“" 'Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt. " 'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord .”
Loving my neighbor means refusing both hidden hatred and the satisfaction of revenge.
Background
Leviticus 19 gives Israel instructions for holy living grounded in the holiness of the Lord. These verses connect neighborly love with honest correction, freedom from grudges, and the rejection of revenge.
Teaching
God cares about the resentment we carry inwardly as well as the actions others can see. Love does not require silence about wrongdoing, but it calls us to speak truth without hatred. Refusing revenge means surrendering the desire to make another person suffer, not pretending that harm never happened. Jesus affirms this command as central to a life shaped by love for God.
Reflect
- Is there a grudge I am quietly feeding?
- How could I address a difficult truth with both courage and love?
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and uncover the resentment I have allowed to settle there. Help me speak honestly, maintain wise boundaries, and love without seeking revenge. Amen.
