Exodus 34:6-7 — Meaning & Reflection
“And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The Lord , the Lord , the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."”
God’s mercy welcomes us home, while his holiness teaches us to take sin seriously.
Background
After Israel’s worship of the golden calf, Moses returns to Mount Sinai with new stone tablets. As the covenant is renewed, the Lord proclaims his character to Moses.
Teaching
God reveals himself as patient, gracious, and generous in forgiveness. Yet his mercy does not mean that wrongdoing is harmless or that justice can be ignored. The warning about generations shows how deeply sin can wound families and communities. In Jesus Christ, we see God’s mercy and holiness meet, inviting us into honest repentance and restored fellowship.
Reflect
- Which part of God’s character do I most need to remember today?
- What pattern of sin do I need to confess rather than excuse?
Prayer
Lord, I come to you trusting your mercy rather than hiding my sin. Forgive me, and help me turn from what harms others and dishonors you. Amen.
