Joshua 1:9 — Meaning & Reflection
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."”
Courage is commanded because God's presence is promised.
Background
Moses has died, and Joshua must lead Israel into the Promised Land. God repeats the call to be strong and courageous three times in this chapter.
Teaching
Joshua faced fortified cities and a people prone to wander. God did not promise an easy task; He promised Himself. Courage is not the absence of fear but obedience grounded in the fact that God goes everywhere we go.
Reflect
- What step of obedience requires courage from me?
- How does God's presence change that step?
Prayer
Lord, You are with me wherever I go. Make me strong and courageous to do what You have called me to do. Amen.
