Galatians 5:22-23 — Meaning & Reflection
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Christlike character is grown by the Spirit, not manufactured by effort.
Background
Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, writing to churches tempted to return to law-keeping as the path to righteousness.
Teaching
"Fruit" is singular — one harvest with nine flavors. Fruit grows through connection, not strain. As we walk by the Spirit, He produces in us the character of Jesus. No law forbids such a life; it fulfills what the law aimed at.
Reflect
- Which fruit is most lacking in me right now?
- How can I stay in step with the Spirit today?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, grow Your fruit in me — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Amen.
