John 6:68-69 — Meaning & Reflection
“Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."”
Faith holds to Jesus not because every question is answered, but because eternal life is found in him.
Background
In John’s Gospel, many disciples withdraw after Jesus’ difficult teaching about the bread of life. When Jesus asks whether the Twelve will also leave, Peter answers with this confession.
Teaching
Peter recognizes that Jesus offers what no other teacher can give: the words of eternal life. His confession does not explain every difficult saying, but it identifies the One worthy of trust. Faith can bring its unanswered questions to Christ without turning away. God invites us to rest our confidence in his Son rather than in our ability to understand everything.
Reflect
- Where am I tempted to turn away from Jesus because I do not understand?
- What has helped me recognize his words as life-giving?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I bring you my questions and my need for certainty. Help me remain near you, trusting that you have the words of eternal life. Amen.
