John 7:37-39 — Meaning & Reflection

“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”

John 7:37-39 (NIV)

Jesus welcomes our thirst and gives his Spirit so that received grace becomes life flowing outward.

Background

Jesus makes this invitation in Jerusalem on the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles. John explains that the living water refers to the Spirit believers would receive after Jesus was glorified.

Teaching

Jesus does not ask thirsty people to satisfy themselves before coming to him. He invites them to believe and receive the life only he can give. John identifies this gift as the Holy Spirit, whose promised coming follows Jesus’ glorification. The Spirit’s presence is not merely private comfort; God’s life within us also overflows in love and service.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to you with the thirst I cannot satisfy on my own. Fill me with your Spirit, and let your grace flow through my words and actions. Amen.
