John 6:37-40 — Meaning & Reflection

“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."”

John 6:37-40 (NIV)

The Savior who welcomes you today is committed to keeping you and raising you on the last day.

Background

These verses continue Jesus’ bread-of-life teaching after the feeding of the multitude. He explains his mission in terms of the Father’s will, the welcome of those who come, and their future resurrection.

Teaching

Jesus gives a firm assurance that he will not reject the one who comes to him. His welcome rests on the Father’s saving purpose, not on a reluctant mercy we must persuade him to show. His care reaches beyond the present into the resurrection at the last day. We can bring our fears to a Savior whose commitment is deeper and more enduring than our own.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to you trusting your promise not to cast me out. Steady my heart in your faithful care, and help me face the future with resurrection hope. Amen.
