John 6:35 — Meaning & Reflection
“Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Jesus offers himself, not merely his gifts, as the nourishment our souls most deeply need.
Background
After feeding the multitude, Jesus addresses people who seek him in Capernaum. Their discussion of bread and manna leads to his declaration that he is the bread of life.
Teaching
The crowd has experienced Jesus providing food, but he calls them beyond the gift to the Giver. As the bread of life, he is the source of the lasting life they need. Coming to him and believing in him describe the trusting response to this invitation. His promise does not erase bodily needs or emotional struggles; it places our deepest hope in a relationship with him.
Reflect
- Am I seeking Jesus mainly for what he might give me, or for who he is?
- What would depending on him as daily nourishment look like in my ordinary routine?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that I often seek your gifts while neglecting your presence. Teach me to come to you with faith and receive the life only you can give. Amen.
