John 3:30 — Meaning & Reflection
“He must become greater; I must become less.”
Humility finds joy when Jesus becomes the center, even when we are no longer noticed.
Background
John the Baptist says this after his disciples express concern that people are going to Jesus. Comparing himself to the bridegroom’s friend, John explains that Jesus’ growing prominence fulfills his joy.
Teaching
John understands that his calling is to prepare people for Jesus, not to compete with him. His willingness to decrease comes from joy in Christ’s rightful place. Christian humility does not mean denying our God-given worth; it means releasing our claim to be the center. We become freer to serve when Christ’s glory matters more than our recognition.
Reflect
- Where does another person’s recognition stir competition in me?
- How could I make Jesus more visible through an unnoticed act of service?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess how easily I seek attention and approval. Give me the joy of serving you faithfully, whether or not anyone notices. Amen.
