John 4:13-14 — Meaning & Reflection
“Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."”
What Jesus gives is more than temporary relief: his life becomes a spring within us, reaching into eternity.
Background
Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well near Sychar. Using her daily task of drawing water, he moves the conversation toward the living water he can give.
Teaching
Ordinary water meets a real need, but its relief must continually be renewed. Jesus uses that contrast to describe his gift of enduring spiritual life. He does not promise freedom from every earthly longing or hardship; he promises a life sustained by him and reaching into eternity. We are invited to receive from him what temporary comforts cannot provide.
Reflect
- What temporary comfort am I asking to satisfy a deeper spiritual thirst?
- How can I make room today to receive from Jesus rather than simply distract myself?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I bring you the thirst beneath my restless searching. Help me receive your life and depend on you more deeply than on passing comforts. Amen.
