John 3:17-18 — Meaning & Reflection

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.”

John 3:17-18 (NIV)

God sent Jesus to save, inviting us out of condemnation and into the life that faith receives.

Background

These verses appear in the passage surrounding Jesus’ nighttime conversation with Nicodemus. Following the declaration of God’s love for the world, they explain the Son’s saving mission and the significance of believing in him.

Teaching

God’s purpose in sending his Son is salvation, not a delight in condemning people. Yet the passage does not minimize judgment: unbelief leaves a person under condemnation. Faith receives the rescue God gives through his only begotten Son. This calls us neither to despair nor complacency, but to entrust ourselves to Jesus.

Reflect

Prayer

Father, I thank you for sending your Son to save a world in need. Help me turn from unbelief and rest my hope in Jesus alone. Amen.
